A few weeks go, we were a bit surprised to see that Philly Chocolate in the Philadelphia Building at 1317 Walnut St. had closed up shop, making it the second chocoholics’ heaven to have thrown in the towel in this Midtown Village space in Washington Square West. (At least Philly Chocolate remains in business, in modified form, sharing space with its sister outfit Philly Cupcake at 20th and South streets in Graduate Hospital. This space’s prior occupant, Naked Chocolate Cafe, seems never to have found a new home after it closed almost three years ago with a note telling its fans to “stay tuned for updates” about its future.)
The prime retail space did not sit vacant long. In no time, we noticed new signage up for the next retailer set to move in. South Philly’s Potito’s Bakery opened to modest fanfare last week. To many, Potito’s is a South Philadelphia institution, specializing in cannolis, zeppolis, biscottis, and specialty cakes.
Let’s hope it becomes a Center City staple as well – it’s always great to see a local business open in some of the city’s prime retail stretches. And considering a Cheesecake Factory is opening a few blocks west on Walnut (not that we’re complaining, chains have their place too), we’ll take all the local business flavors we can.
